In the mid 70s music was going through a dull period.
The Beatles were long since broken up, Bowie was losing his edge and
the kids wanted something new. Recognisisng that no record store in
Aberdeen was catering to the demand for music, Raymond Bird decided
to open his own independant music store, named One Up.
One Up was established in 1979, initially specialising in secondhand
punk and mod style, with a catalogue of cutting edge music from bands
of the day like Joy Division, the Fall, the Specials, the Clash and
the Jam. They then moved to offering a range of records from bands such
as the Stone Roses, Public Enemy, the Beastie boys and Nirvana.
One Up are still moving forwards with the music of today from the new
metal sounds of Limp Biskit to Badly Drawn Boy and Cold Play.
Second hand CD's can be bought and sold in the stores basement along
with the largest vinyl collection of dance and contemporary music in
Aberdeen.
This range of styles and their approach to music gives One Up a unique
edge on the other music stores you will find in Aberdeen.
One Up offers a full ordering service and mail order service for CD's
and they also accept orders by mail. In the near future, One Up will
be offering information to the public through their own website.
A love of music was the main driving force behind One Up, making it
not just a music shop but more a way of life.
